Inter-Island Ferry Network Disruption

Please expect delays across all carriers for Inter-Island road freight for at least the next few weeks due to capacity constraints across the Cook Strait. Unfortunately, only one of the three ferries is currently operational and in service. Additional ferries are being utilised as cover, but capacity is severely reduced.

All transport carriers are currently experiencing transit delays of up to two days between the islands (i.e. two day services are now pushed out to four days), but further delays are anticipated over the coming weeks.

Further to this, some dangerous goods may be delayed even further.

For urgent courier items, we suggest utilising Inter-Island Overnight services (satchels or cartons), which travel by air inter-island and are therefore not subject to these ferry delays.

We have been advised that an additional ferry will return to service at the beginning of October after undergoing maintenance. However, it may take a few weeks to clear any backlog of freight across all carriers before services return to normal.

Please reach out to your Site Manager to discuss alternative options and keep and eye on our website for further updates.
