The Rural Economies Centre of Excellence (RECoE) is a collaboration between the Queensland Government Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) and four Queensland Universities aimed at understanding and developing the State’s rural economies. This annual forum is aimed at showcasing the research collaboration's completed and ongoing research into Queensland's rural economies.
The Public Lecture
Geoff Cockfield is the Acting Executive Director of the Institute for Resilient Regions at the University of Southern Queensland. He has a long history in the study and discussion of agricultural and rural development policies. In this lecture he will describe how rural development policy-making in Australia is confounded by the distractions of simplistic pictures, both positive and negative of life in rural areas. He will then propose some ways in which those engaged in rural development can best focus on, and understand, the most substantial issues.
Rural Economies Forum
This forum will focus on some of the key issues in rural economic development, as identified through the work of the Rural Economies Centre of Excellence (RECoE). This is an opportunity for those engaged in rural development practice, policy and research to participate in deliberative discussions of these issues. Key themes are:
- Connectivity and the digital economy;
- Entrepreneurship, innovation and business culture;
- Developing rural tourism;
- Employment and skills in rural economies;
- Maximising the benefits of infrastructure investment;
- Enhancing agricultural value chains; and
- Low carbon futures for rural economies.
Subject to final availability, the Forum will be opened by Queensland Minister for Agriculture Industry Development and Fisheries, the Hon Mark Furner.
