Solomon Islands PM wants to ‘hold on to power’ using Chinese police presence

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare signed the recent policing pact with China because he wants to “hold on to power”, according to ASPI Senior Analyst Malcolm Davis.

“There’s elections coming up – he’s not a popular leader,” Mr Davis told Sky News contributor Steve Price.

“So, what he’s counting on is that Chinese police presence to suppress and oppress the Solomon Islands people so that he can hang on to power, irrespective of the result of that election.”
