Seeking Expressions of Interest

Integrating non-dispensing pharmacists into general practice

The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA), with the assistance of the Australian Digital Health Agency is seeking expressions of interest from general practices in the Gold Coast and Brisbane areas to participate in a Pharmacists in General Practice project

The project will examine the role of the pharmacist in increasing the utilisation of digital health measures by practitioners and patients, including the use of My Health Record, & Electronic Prescribing.

Integrating a pharmacists into your practice will result in improved practice level and patient care outcomes as demonstrated by (for example):
·         Improved digital health literacy
·         Increased utilisation of My Health Record by clinicians and patients
·         Increased utilisation of electronic prescribing
·         Improved individual patient health outcomes i.e. blood pressure and cholesterol levels, HbA1C
·         Improved patient medication adherence
·         Reduced inappropriate polypharmacy
·         Improved prescribing practices
·         Increased and enhanced inter-professional relationships between practice pharmacists and other health care professionals
·         Improved transitional care
·         Improved general practice staff knowledge and satisfaction
·         Improved patient knowledge and satisfaction

·         On average, pharmacists employed 16 hours a week may relieve 4 hours of GP time/week.[1]
·         It is estimated that a clinical audit undertaken by one pharmacist in an Australian trial lead to a cost saving of approximately $125,700 over 3 years and $183,000 over 5 years.[1]
 
Requirements
·         Ability to provide a dedicated consulting room for the pharmacist to use two days a week
·         Pharmacist will need to be able to access medical software
·         Onboarding of pharmacist with practice policies & processes
·         Current demographic analysis software license
