Thank you for your interest in working for TASC. Each year we employ around 1000 sessional staff to assist with senior secondary external assessment.

Our sessional staff include Setting Examiners, Critics, Supervisor Coordinators, Supervisors, Marking Coordinators, Markers and casual staff.

Sessional staff are employed by TASC, and are managed through the Department for Education, Children and Young People’s employment conditions, travel and relief allowances and rates.

The Role:

Each year, we welcome applications from new and experienced applicants for the Marking Coordinator and Marker roles, including educators and former educators who have:

Marking Coordinator

Marker

Observer

The observer process is a professional learning opportunity which allows access to the first Written, Folio and/or Practical Marker meeting. This is beneficial for the ongoing comparability of standards and for teachers new to a TASC course and provides valuable insight into the marking process.

    1. Complete the 2024 Observer Application Form to indicate your course and role preferences.

Note:

  • Observers can only attend the first Marker meeting with TASC’s written permission.
  • Observers may attend practical/performance and display assessments with TASC’s written permission.
  • Observers do not receive a marking load.
  • The Observer position is not a paid role and they are not eligible for any travel accommodation, or relief reimbursements.
  • Observers are not permitted to attend any student oral interviews.

2024 applications are now open for Setting Examiners and Exam Critics.

Every year TASC welcomes applications from new and experienced applicants, including educators and former educators who have: 

  • a deep and broad knowledge of course content (generally five or more years teaching in that topic area) 
  • demonstrated ability to plan and deliver on time 
  • a creative approach to evaluating learning outcomes 
  • skills and expertise in building effective assessment items 
  • analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • excellent written communication skills 
  • the highest standards of accuracy and an affinity for meticulous work 
  • a commitment to TASC values of Connection, Equity, Integrity and Learning. 

To ensure that there is no perceived conflict of interest, you must not be teaching the Level 3 or 4 course in the same year you write or review the exam for that course.

Setting Examiners

Round 1 Setting Examiner applications:

  • open Monday 4 December

If you are successful in Round 1 as a Setting Examiner, this will provide you the opportunity to begin setting over the holiday break.

Round 2 Setting Examiner applications:

  • open Tuesday 19 December
  • close Friday 9 February 2024.

Exam Critics

Applications open Monday 4 December and close on Friday, 23 February 2024.

Exam Critic applications are appointed to suitable applicants on a rolling basis. This is to ensure that exam papers are developed to meet the external assessment timeframes.

For your application to proceed, you need to have completed both the TASC Sessional Employment Register and 2024 Exam Critic Application Form.

TASC uses the DECYP PageUp Talent Management Software for the recruitment of sessional staff.  The secure application system allows TASC to efficiently manage the processing of the sessional staff applications.  The PageUp system is used for Department for Education, Children and Young People jobs advertised via the jobs.tas.gov.au website.

2023 applications for Exam Supervisors and Supervisor Coordinator roles are now closed.

NEW Application Process: TASC collaborated with the Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) to create the TASC Sessional Employment Register, so you can apply for multiple roles (such as Setting Examiners, Exam Critics, Marking Coordinators, Markers, Supervisor Coordinators and Exam Supervisors) using one platform.

Once you have registered, TASC will send you a link via email every year so you can specify your preferences for courses, exam centres and workloads based on selected roles, eliminating the need to complete a full application each year (unless you need to update personal information or roles selected).

The Role:

Each year, we welcome applications from new and experienced applicants to administer the end-of-year exams (external assessments) at endorsed Exam Centres around the state in line with TASC’s instructions.

Complete the TASC Sessional Employment Register to apply to work for TASC as a Supervisor Coordinator or Supervisor. Once registered, TASC will send a link via email for applicants to specify their courses, exam centres and workload preferences based on selected roles.

  • Supervisor Coordinator applications close on Friday 28 July.
  • Supervisor applications close on Friday 1 September.
Training meetings:
  • Supervisor Coordinators are required to attend a training meeting before the exam period. A half day training payment will be made to attendees. A detailed agenda for the meeting will be sent early in October.
  • Exam Supervisors are required to attend a half day training meeting with their Coordinator before the exam period. A half-day training payment will be made to attendees but travel claims cannot be submitted.
Applications for Clerical Assistants to assist with the External Examinations in 2024 are taken via the TASC Clerical Assistant employment register.  Inclusion on the register does not guarantee that an offer of employment will be made.

Each year TASC employs casual Clerical Assistants to assist with the handling and processing of Year 11 and 12 external exams and results.

It’s a big job with almost 15,000 written exams completed each year and more than 10,000 students sent a statement of results and the certificates they achieved.

The work:

  • This work is based in the Hobart area
  • 3-4 weeks of operational and administrative work across November and early December to process and distribute completed exam papers, student results and certificates
  • Hands-on, physical, and fast-paced work, where accuracy is pivotal
  • Working in small and dynamic groups
  • Paid at classification General Stream Band 1 ($ rates for 2023 to be updated shortly for relief staff)
  • Looks great on your CV demonstrating your meticulous administrative and organisational skills

How to Apply:

Applications for 2024 will be assessed on a rolling basis, due to the volume received you may only be notified if your application is successful.

In accordance with the State Service Act 2000 all employees working for TASC must carry out duties in accordance with this the State Service Code of Conduct.

In addition, sessional staff must complete the below tasks before they commence work.

  • Confidentiality and Conflict of Interest Declaration

Submit a Confidentiality and Conflict of Interest Declaration Form. This is to disclose any actual, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest (e.g. family members sitting for examinations). Please refer to the Conflict of Interest page for further details.

  • New Employee Starter Pack

Submit a New Employee Starter Pack if you:

    • Have not been employed by the Department for Education, Children and Young People within the last 12 months (or ever), or,
    • If you need to update your banking, tax, or superannuation details.
  • Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP)

A current Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) card is a mandatory requirement for employment with TASC. All registrations must:

    • Be of the ‘Employee/Volunteer’ class (not ‘Volunteer’ only)
    • Include the child-regulated activity of ‘child education service (government schools)’, and,
    • Include the Department for Education, Children and Young People as an employer (for new additions please select the Office of Tasmanian Assessment, Standards and Certification when choosing the location option)

The payment rates for sessional staff participating in external assessments is set in the Office of Tasmanian Assessment, Standards and Certification (Fees) Regulations 2013 (Schedule 2). The rates are updated on 1 July each year.

TASC sessional staff receive payments for undertaking their TASC role, which is to be completed in addition to any normal duties they may have at a school.  See ‘Relief reimbursements’ below for more information about when relief claims can be made.

Some sessional staff may be eligible to submit claims for travel, transport and accommodation allowances/reimbursements directly related to work for TASC.

What claims will TASC pay?

TASC may pay a claim when a school has employed a relief teacher to allow Sessional Staff to participate in the following meetings:

  • Critic and Setting Examiner meetings at TASC
  • Marking Coordinator meetings
  • Marker meetings
  • Supervisor Coordinator meetings
  • Panel Marking for practical, oral and folio assessments
  • Discrepancy Panel meetings for folio, oral and practical assessments
  • Assessment Panel meetings for written exams
  • External Assessment Specifications Advisory Panel meetings.

TASC will not pay claims when a school or college has employed a relief teacher:

  • to allow Sessional Staff to participate in setting, critiquing or marking written exams or individual folios (whether at an official marking centre or not)
  • for non-timetabled classes or activities, such as recess and lunchtimes
  • for days or times when the Sessional Staff were not normally employed at school.

TASC will not pay claims directly to individual teachers or when Sessional Staff did not attend the scheduled training or meeting.

How much will TASC reimburse?

TASC will pay the hourly rate for a Band I Level 13 Relief Teacher according to the Department for Education, Children and Young People’s Salary Scales on the day of employment, up to the maximum claimable hours for relief of five hours per day per teacher.

How do schools make a claim?

To make a relief claim, schools and colleges must:

  • complete the TASC Relief Claim Form
  • include a copy of each Sessional Staff’s teaching timetable
  • issue a Tax Invoice to TASC or raise a Journal Transfer Request Form (if DECYP employee) for the amount calculated on the Relief Claim Form
  • email all documents to accounts@tasc.tas.gov.au.
