ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a definition of corpus linguistics and the motivation for its study, its limits, and its potential. The chapter compares the study of usage and elicitation and addresses criticisms from claims of negative evidence. Corpus approaches can be used in many fields such as sociolinguistics, language variation and change, language evolution, typology and neurotypology, psycholinguistics, and usage-based linguistics.Abstract
