Some Longford Intermediate School pupils have given up an afternoon of free time to bake slices for a good cause.
The pupils had last Thursday afternoon off school while parent-teacher interviews were held.
The bake-off counted as part of the pupils’ community service component of the William Pike Challenge Award.
The baking was given to Otago Southland Cancer Society of New Zealand volunteer co-ordinator Caroline Carter to support families dealing with cancer.
Ms Carter said she thought it was ‘‘awesome’’ of the pupils to help.
‘‘I think its a great awareness for the kids to have.’’
The baking would be frozen and given out.
Some of the cancer society’s volunteer bakers also helped the pupils.
Pupil Katelyn Horrell (11) said the cancer society was a good cause.
‘‘It’s nice to be able to do something for the cancer society.’’
