THE Alotau wharf which follows a climate resilient project design is set to be opened next Wednesday, says Milne Bay government works supervision unit manager William Vincent.
Vincent said the US$12 million (about K43 million) wharf would benefit the local economy being a maritime province.
“The Alotau wharf upgrade is a major development under the Asian Development Bank grant together with the Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA) and the Australian government,” he said.
“The Milne Bay government is providing support on the ground in ensuring the project is implemented.”
According to CCDA, a feasibility study was conducted in 2016 revealing that the 53-year-old Alotau wharf was in a poor state and vulnerable to effects of climate change, especially sea level rises and storm surges.
“A reputable contractor, Pacific Marine Group, did the construction,” Vincent added.
“It comes with both high and low deck.
“It is a significant and a very important project for Milne Bay.
“The standards of resilience incorporated into the designs and has made this an important pilot project.
“The provincial implementation unit is hard at work to ensure that the wharf is opened on July 5.”
The wharf design and facilities will also accommodate those with limited mobility, the sick and pregnant mothers.
It will continue to function as a public loading and unloading facility for small vessels supplying the needs for locals.
