State Library of Queensland has launched its First Nations Strategy 2024–28: A plan for reframing relationships. The strategy outlines a co-designed approach to delivering First Nations initiatives. As a memory institution and custodian of Queensland’s documentary heritage, we have a critical role in facilitating the truth-telling conversation for Path to Treaty. The First Nations Strategy affirms our commitment to be better – embracing First Nations knowledge, sharing First Nations stories, and making decisions with First Nations peoples and communities. State Library has invested in the development of the new First Nations Strategy branch led by Tenneil Murray. As director, Tenneil will provide strategic leadership in implementing monitoring and evaluating the strategy. Schoolies – it is the annual school leaver event where young adults have a week-long celebration at the end of their schooling before commencing further study, work or travel. But long before Schoolies starts, the Department of Treaty, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, Communities and the Arts work behind the scenes in partnership with nine Queensland Government agencies, the City of Gold Coast and seven community partners to deliver the Safer Schoolies Response. With the slogan Be Safe and Watch Your Mates, the Safer Schoolies Response is designed to manage the population growth of school leavers who choose to book their end-of-year holidays on the Gold Coast, and provides support on the ground in Airlie Beach. The Response aims to ensure the Schoolies holiday period is as manageable, safe and respectful as possible for school leavers and the local community through a suite of integrated health and support services, drug and alcohol free diversionary activities and increased safety and security measures. We acknowledge all the partners who work tirelessly to ensure the Schoolies period is as safe as possible. To find out more about what we do, visit saferschoolies.qld.gov.au
