Update 5 April 2023: Registration

Registration includes all meals, and accommodation if requested. Accommodation is in shared cabins (including some accessible cabins).

Registration will open on 15 April, and close on 3 July 2023. Refunds can be requested until 1 July (by emailing alworkshop2023@gmail.com).

ALW will start from 11am on Friday 21 July, to allow some regional or interstate participants to travel to Sydney on the Friday morning.

Directions by public transport: The location for ALW 2023 is at Yarramundi, 7km from Richmond train station in western Sydney. Richmond Train Station is on the T1 line from Central Station; if coming from Domestic Airport station (T8), you change trains at Central. We suggest taking the train from Domestic Airport to Richmond via Central (Platform 18) at one of these times: 7:16am (arr 8:54am), 7:24-7:45am (arr 9:24am), or 7:54am-8:18am (arr 9:54am), or 8:24am-8:50am (arr 10:24am), or 8:58-9:20am (arr 10:54am). The fare is $25 on Opal/credit card. We will be providing lifts from Richmond train station starting from 9am on the Friday morning. If you will need a lift from Richmond station to Yarramundi, please indicate when you register.

Driving directions: If you are driving from regional NSW or the ACT, or from elsewhere in Sydney, the address to put into Google Maps is 316 Springwood Rd, Yarramundi NSW. From Canberra or the Central Coast, the fastest route is via the M7 then exit onto Richmond Rd. If coming from west over the Blue Mountains, you can approach via Bells Line of Road/B59 or the Great Western Highway/A32.

ALW will finish at 1pm on Sunday 23 July. For flight planning purposes we suggest selecting a flight out of Sydney after 5pm. For example, the 2:05pm train from Richmond Station arrives at Sydney's Domestic Airport train station at 3:59pm.

Call for Submissions for ALW 2023

We invite submissions to present at the Australian Languages Workshop (ALW) 2023: Ngawiyala

The theme for ALW 2023 is Ngawiyala. In the Dharug language this means ‘I give, you give’ and speaks to the importance of knowledge and practice transference, relationship, and reciprocity. For example, Elders giving to young ones, and young ones passing it on.

The ALW workshop is an annual opportunity for language practitioners, linguists and others researching, revitalising and advocating for First Nations languages. We are inviting submissions for talks of 15-20 minutes (plus about 10 minutes for questions).

ALW 2023 will be held at YMCA Camp Yarramundi (316 Springwood Rd, Yarramundi), near Richmond in western Sydney. We anticipate that a number of travel subsidies will be available for Indigenous participants coming from outside Sydney. Further details will be provided when registration opens.

How to submit your abstract

Please use the link below to send us your submission, including:

• presentation title;
• all project team members' names and affiliations;
• the names of the team members who will attend and actually present;
• an abstract or descriptive paragraph of 250-300 words about the presentation that outlines: the project, the context, the aims, the learnings or findings, and how this is useful to share.

Deadline for submissions: Tuesday 11 April at 6pm (AEST)

Notification of acceptance is anticipated to be by Friday 21 April.
Online registration will open in mid April.
