The Food & Fibre Discovery Challenge

New Zealand Young Farmers are partnering with Beef + Lamb New Zealand to deliver an exciting challenge for attendees of the Southern (Waimumu) and Central District (Fielding) Field Days.

Our ‘Food & Fibre Discovery Challenge’ is designed to showcase career opportunities across the sector, aimed at secondary school pupils, leavers and career changers, with a smaller challenge for Primary students. We are looking for exhibitors to participate in the challenge to showcase their businesses and career pathways.

What's happening?

Secondary School participants (in teams of 2) will tour the field day site on a scavenger-style hunt guided by the challenge booklet, visiting exhibits and exploring different career pathways as they go. The booklet will ask questions about the sectors on show, set activities to encourage participants to engage with the exhibitors’ displays and help them to understand what steps they can take to excel in these career pathways. Primary students (in teams of 4) will follow a similar approach for their challenge.

Teachers whose students took part in the previous challenge said that it was a superb way to get young people involved in the field days and looking ahead to their futures.

By getting involved in the challenge you will:

  • Engage with future employees and motivate them to embark on a career in your sector.
  • Showcase your brand to the next generation of leaders and inspire them with your latest products, research, and opportunities.
  • Connect with local communities and increase awareness of all that the Food & Fibre sector has to offer.

How could you get involved?

  • By answering participants’ questions to promote a Food & Fibre career (or careers) and/or build their knowledge of the sector. We can provide relevant career sheets too.
  • By sharing your exhibit plans and content, so that we can integrate any relevant displays into the questions/activities.
  • By sponsoring the main prizes to be awarded to the winning teams (valued between $200 - $300).
  • By donating product prizes, either to be awarded to teams as they visit your sites, or to be awarded to the winning teams.
  • By offering a career experience day for a winning participant.

This is a great opportunity to support the development of young people and contribute to the growth and resilience of the Food & Fibre sector, all while encouraging visitors to your sites.
