World Bicycle Day - 3rd June 2021

On Thursday the 3rd of June our school celebrated World Bicycle Day by choosing active travel to get to school. This happened to fall on our already allocated Active Travel Day too. So, a double chance of travelling to school by bike, scooter, skateboard, walking and park and walk. Tuesday and Thursday are the allocated 'Your Move Active Travel Days' and we celebrated 'World Bicycle Day' by pedalling to school on Thursday the 3rd of June to celebrate, and students received a sticker from the Your Move' Team!

When our student team walked throughout the classes gathering the data, they handed out the ‘Your Move’ I love to ride to school stickers to all the participators. It was wonderful to see our BRAND NEW bike racks over-flowing with bicycles and scooters. I sent out a reminder email with a flyer for all the parents on the Monday giving the details of our two active travel days: Tuesday and Thursday, but especially to travel to school by bicycle on the 3rd as we celebrate the amazing form of transport – the bike!

The reason for World Bicycle Day is to recognise the longevity, uniqueness, and versatility of the bicycle, and that it is a reliable, simple, clean, and environmentally friendly mode of transport. World Bicycle Day is associated with promoting a healthy lifestyle! Not to mention, by participating, Scarborough Primary can earn some valuable Your Move points too!

We compared the data collected from Tuesday and Thursday and from the findings it shows active travel mode is up from 53% to 68% on Thursday with car travel going down from 46% to 32%. In addition, 1% of the active travellers are the park and walkers. This is a great result! Well done, Scarborough, on a great active travel week!

I love the collage that was created for the day Sandy. It seems like Scarborough's promo efforts paid off with those results you reported - well done 😊! And what a lovely sight it must have been to see those full bike racks. You have earned 40 points for your event, plus 20 points for such a lovely writeup. 🤩
