Redland City Council voted to endorse the Young Peoples Action Plan 2024 -2027 on January 17, 2024.

2027 Vision. To build safe, strong and self-reliant communities that provide our young people with good access to social infrastructure and services, housing options, welcoming open spaces and a range of suitable sport, recreational, cultural, educational and employment opportunities.

Being a young person can be a difficult time as the transition to independence deepens. Contemporary society has thrown many challenges at our young people, both individually and collectively. Growing up in an increasingly digitally connected society can sometimes come at the expense of strong interpersonal connections crucial to health and happiness. Increasing social and economic pressures place further strains on important relationships.

Redlands Coast is home to approximately 24,500 young people between the ages of 12 and 24. These young people contribute to the social fabric of Redlands Coast in many ways, including formal and informal volunteering, caring for family members, participating in sport and recreation clubs, and championing change for social and environmental causes.

Many young people in our city enjoy deep connection and support from their families and networks. However, some of our young people have increased vulnerability in a number of well-being domains and require additional support from external sources, including health, housing and safety.

Over the lifespan of this action plan, Council aims to harness the power of our existing supports while advocating for the needs of our young people to ensure all young people living on Redlands Coast are able to enjoy a prosperous transition into adulthood.

Council’s commitment to our young people 

At Council, we are committed to acknowledging our young people and where they are at. We will seek out, share and celebrate the successes of our young people. Our young people will know that certain portrayals of their collective image do not define them. We will work tirelessly to ensure our young people feel valued and supported to live a good life and meet their potential. This will be achieved through strong partnerships and collaboration across sectors, levels of government and with young people at the core of all we do.

Why a Young People’s Action Plan

Approximately 24,500 young people are living on Redlands Coast, representing 15.5% of the Redland City population. Our young people are the future locally and globally, in a world that is changing rapidly. When a young person seeks support and guidance on their journey, it is vital that our community is prepared and equipped to provide it.

This action plan sets out how Council will deliver, partner, educate, advocate and facilitate with our partners, community and beyond to build on the strong foundations already established to see our young people succeed. Having a plan reduces uncertainty and sets up defined and achievable goals; it articulates our direction and priorities for the next four years and beyond. It creates measures of success for Council to know if we have achieved what we set out to.

The draft Young People's Action Plan outlines how Council can achieve strategic goals and outcomes. The purpose of this plan is to identify initiatives that:

  • Position Redlands Coast communities as safe and welcoming for young people
  • Build strong relationships that create connections and pathways for young people to navigate their needs
  • Create, promote and foster access, inclusion and participation opportunities for all young people
  • Acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments and positive contributions young people make to Redlands Coast

All residents, businesses and those who work in the city are encouraged to explore the 32 actions outlined in the draft Young People's Action Plan and take the survey beginning on 15 November to let us know your thoughts on the draft plan.

    Redland City Council has endorsed two community-centric documents designed to enhance the city’s livability and create more grassroots opportunities for residents across Redlands Coast.

    The Stronger Communities Strategy and Young People’s Action Plan 2024-27 are aligned with Council’s corporate plan, which sets the long-term vision and goals for the city.

    Mayor Karen Williams said the Stronger Communities Strategy provided a strategic framework for the planning and delivery of programs and initiatives that would strengthen the social fabric of Redlands Coast.

    “Council’s vision is to ensure our city has resilient and inclusive communities where residents of all ages, abilities and cultures feel safe, connected and supported,” Cr Williams said.

    “This strategy has four key pillars, one of which is about working together to forge strong and enduring partnerships that will help us achieve great outcomes for Redlands Coast.

    “There is also a focus on ensuring residents are able to actively participate in a variety of meaningful social and civic activities, which is a direct response to community feedback.

    “Another key theme is ensuring the unique character and livability of Redlands Coast is preserved and enhanced through placemaking, planning and management of community assets.”

    Cr Williams said the Young People’s Action Plan was an important document that would continue Council’s work supporting the city’s more than 24,000 residents aged 12-24.

    “The vision is to build safe and self-reliant communities that provide our young people with access to social infrastructure and services, housing options and welcoming places,” Cr Williams said.

    “Three thematic goals are incorporated in the Action Plan, including creating, promoting and fostering access, inclusion and participation opportunities.

    “We have said many times before that we don’t want our young people to be our greatest export, and this action plan is designed to allow more youths to make Redlands Coast their home long-term.”

    Council conducted a community engagement exercise in 2023 to help inform the intent of both documents.

    “Residents and groups representing various cross sections of the community participated in the consultation process,” Cr Williams said.

    “Council has taken steps to incorporate actions to address issues raised during the community engagement period and these have been reflected in the documents adopted today.

    “Both provide a platform from which Council can continue building on the themes identified, in line with the Our Future Redlands corporate plan.”

    From parkour to park jams, Redlands Coast community organisations have used Redland City Council funding to help deliver a host of local Youth Week activities each year.

    Mayor Karen Williams said the funding opportunity from Council was open to not-for-profit community and sporting organisations based on Redlands Coast or delivering programs for Redlands Coast youth.

    Expressions of Interest for funds in support of this year’s Activate Youth Week opened today, 8 January, and close on 31 January 2024.

    Cr Williams said the aim was to encourage youth and sporting organisations to apply for funding to deliver events, workshops, and/or activities for young people, aged 12-24, during Queensland Youth Week from 7 to 13 April, 2024.

    “We have seen some fantastic events receive funding in past years and the response to these community activities has been tremendous,” she said.

    “Activate (formerly known as the Redlands Coast Youth Week Grants Program) is an initiative that gives youth and sporting groups support for the wonderful work they are already doing in our community.”

    Redland Community Centre has used funds it received under the Council initiative to hold two “Canvas & Cocoa” events that brought together locals aged 16 to 25 for a night of “painting, chocolate and cheese boards”.

    Other events for Youth Week in the past have included pop-up gaming vans, movie nights, tennis clinics, skate park jam, parkour and rock climbing, and screen-printing workshops.

    Cr Williams said the funding opportunity aligned with Council’s draft Young People’s Action Plan 2024-2027 that went out to public consultation in November / December last year.

    Approximately 24,700 young people are living on Redlands Coast, representing 15.5 percent of the Redland City population, she said.

    “Council’s vision for 2027 is to build safe, strong and self-reliant communities that provide our young people with good access to social infrastructure and services, housing options, welcoming open spaces and a range of suitable sport, recreational, cultural, educational and employment opportunities,” Cr Williams said.

    Redlands Coast residents are invited to share their ideas on how their communities could be made even stronger.

    Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said Council has opened public consultation on two important draft strategic plans aimed at safeguarding Redlands Coast’s much-envied lifestyle.

    “The Redlands Coast Stronger Communities Strategy 2024-2027 sets out a framework for planning and delivery of approaches and initiatives to ensure that we continue to strengthen the social fabric of our city,” Cr Williams said.

    “Also open for comment is the Redlands Coast Young People’s Action Plan 2024-2027, that is focussed on building safe, strong and connected communities that cater for the needs of our young people.

    “There are approximately 24,500 people aged between 12 and 24 living on Redlands Coast, representing 15.5 percent of our city’s population.

    “Young people need good access to social infrastructure and services, housing options, welcoming open spaces and a range of suitable sport, recreational, cultural, educational and employment opportunities.”

    Cr Williams said the Stronger Communities Strategy 2024-2027 aimed to safeguard Redlands Coast as a city with a naturally wonderful lifestyle, connected communities and a city that is ready to embrace opportunities.

    Community consultation on both plans is now open.

    “I encourage all residents, business operators and those who work in our city, to take some time to explore the draft documents for both the Stronger Communities Strategy and the Young People’s Action Plan, and share with us your feedback,” Cr Williams said.

    “Your thoughts and insights will help guide these important documents, which will contribute to shaping our communities and city.”
